9 Since nursing anesthesia programs have a shorter duration of instruction, it is imperative that the educational processes for nurse anesthetists become efficient. Because simulation can playa significant role in optimizing education for anesthesia care providers, we have incorporated simulation into the Nursing Anesthesia Program at the Medical College of Georgia. Before I describe how we are using simulation from both practical and conceptual perspectives, additional background on the education of nurse anesthetists might be helpful.
Teaching Effectiveness Simulation is also helpful in the evaluation of classroom instruction. The goal of didactic teaching in anesthesia education is to prepare students for clinical practice. Information should be presented in a fashion that is clinically useful. Ultimately, the operating theater becomes the optimal location for the evaluation of instruction. The generalizability of clinical evaluation of didactic instruction is limited by the inability to standardize the clinical situation for uniform evaluation of all students.
4 USING SIMULATORS FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS AND ANESTHESIA RESIDENT EDUCATION Andrew C. Lee Department of Anesthesiology University of Rochester School of Medicine Rochester, New York 1. INTRODUCTION Over the last several years, there has been a dramatic increase in the use of anesthesia human patient simulators for educational purposes. Full-scale, computer run simulators are currently being used to teach courses ranging from basic instruction ofnon-anesthesiologists to the more complicated Anesthesia Crisis Resource Management™,1 for continuing medical education of attending anesthesiologists.
